Celebrating 20 years of DOE, join Durham Opera Ensemble and Durham University Palatinate Orchestra for an evening of operatic highlights from The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and more!

Singers from the award-winning Durham Opera Ensemble, accompanied by the Durham University Palatinate Orchestra, invite you to a spectacular Anniversary Concert, celebrating twenty years of the Durham Opera Ensemble in the magnificent setting of Durham Castle’s Great Hall.

Drawing exclusively from operas staged by Durham Opera Ensemble over the past twenty years, the programme celebrates the music that has shaped the society’s history. Enjoy a dazzling array of arias, duets, quartets and choruses from operas by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Purcell, Gilbert and Sullivan, and many more. Opening each half of the concert, the Palatinate Orchestra performs Strauss’ Die Fledermaus Overture and the Act IV Entr’acte from Bizet’s Carmen.

This event will take place in the Great Hall of Durham Castle, Palace Green, Durham, DH1 3RW.

The event will begin at 8.30pm and last for approximately 100min with interval. Doors will open 30 minutes before the start of the performance.

Join Durham University Choral Society for their first concert of the year as they perform Finzi’s "Magnificat" and "Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice", closing with Elgar’s "The Music Makers".

Conducted by Tim Burke, Durham University Choral Society presents a programme of reflection and sacrifice this Remembrance Day.

The concert opens with Finzi’s "Magnificat", a powerful introduction and a tribute to his 125th birth and 70th death anniversary. Following is his, "Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice", a thought-provoking anthem expressing lament and suffering.

The night builds up to Elgar’s "The Music Makers", where he brings out the creativity of what makes us human. The imagery of 'a singer who sings no more' is the epitome of the delicate transience of life, vividly foregrounding the importance of the world’s past.

The performance will begin at 7.30pm and last for approximately 90 minutes with interval. Doors will open at 6.45pm.

Refreshments will be available from a bar in the Cathedral nave 'by donation' before the concert and during an interval.
