Purcell's King Arthur

Purcell's King Arthur

Dunelm Consort and Players present a lively celebration of Arthurian legend and pagan folklore in Henry Purcell's opera, as the Saxons and the Britons battle for honour, glory, and the chance to secure a place in history.

Wizards and nymphs, spirits and satyrs, soldiers and shepherds, gods and men - this performance of the music from one of the first British operas sees soloists and chorus take on a wonderful array of roles, as supernatural powers meddle in the earthly disputes of the Britons. Far from the familiar round table of Camelot, the opera depicts King Arthur's efforts to rescue his wife Emmeline from the heathen Saxon king of Kent, Oswald; enriched by Purcell's vibrant battle scenes, touching love songs, pastoral merrymaking, rowdy drinking choruses, and moving meditations on the beauty of Britain.

Come (if you dare) and see this marvellous work performed in Durham Castle on the 7th May, conducted by Barney Howard and narrated by the Rev'd Canon Michael Hampel.
