Ghosts: A SpOoooky Sitcom Parody Play

Ghosts: A SpOoooky Sitcom Parody Play

Alison can see ghosts! After inheriting a new house and a near-death experience, an eclectic mix of eccentric spirits appear before her, and chaos ensues...

It is impossible for Alison and Mike Cooper to find a new home, until Alison gets a call that she has inherited Button House from a distant relative. It seems as though their luck has turned around – but little do they know the house is haunted by nine ghosts from across the ages. After a rather unfortunate incident, Alison develops the ability to see and hear the ghosts, and the chaos of this found-family ensues.

With wedding planning, explosive bombs, Durham jokes, and the signature Ooook! sitcom karaoke scene, this student-written parody of BBC Ghosts promises to be a jam-packed two hours of fun!

All profits from this show will be donated to charity.

Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto

Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto

Join Durham University Orchestral Society for a programme of favourites from the classical world in Elvet Methodist Church.

Full of dazzling passages, lyrical melodies and witty conversations between the soloist and orchestra, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor is the pinnacle of the composer’s oeuvre. With Joshua Evett as the soloist, look forward to half an hour of classical poise and romantic tenderness.

Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’ Symphony No. 1 is, in the composer’s own words, a symphony as Mozart or Haydn might have written if they were born in the 20th Century. Including mischief, surprises and musical fireworks, this masterpiece contains the simplicity of the classical period paired with Prokofiev’s contemporary originality.

Also featured is Wagner’s poetic and beautiful love-letter, the Siegfried Idyll, and Tony Finno’s orchestration of the only surviving movement of Debussy’s B minor Symphony - an early premonition of the genius to come.

Shakespeare in the Garden - Twelfth Night

Shakespeare in the Garden - Twelfth Night

Castle Theatre Company is delighted to announce its production of Twelfth Night. When a ship is wrecked on the rocks, a tale of mistaken identities, love triangles, and humorous deceptions ensues.

Castle Theatre Company is one of the oldest performing arts groups at Durham University, and for over four decades have taken an annual summer Shakespeare tour around the south of England and the USA, performing classic comedies on the lawns of stately homes, gardens, and abbeys. 2024’s touring production of 'As You Like It' was performed to sold-out audiences around the south of England.

After the shipwreck, Viola is separated from her twin brother, Sebastian. Disguised as a man, named Cesario, she enters the service of Duke Orsino, who already loves Lady Olivia. However, Olivia falls for Cesario, unaware that she is Viola, while Viola secretly loves Orsino. Meanwhile, Sebastian, who survived the shipwreck, arrives, leading to Olivia marrying him, thinking he is Cesario. As the confusion unravels, Viola's identity is revealed, and Orsino realizes his love for her  .

Under the Greenwood Tree

Under the Greenwood Tree

Join Durham University Chamber Choir for Under the Greenwood Tree, a lyrical journey through British poetry and music, exploring Shakespeare, love, memory, and the natural world.

With almost every piece rooted in British poetry or composition, this concert celebrates British artists and the enduring influence of Shakespeare. The program weaves together choral settings from Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Sonnet 18, alongside works by Elgar, Finzi, Mealor, and Rebecca Dale.

Exploring themes of love and memory, the concert moves from the mournful strains of Drop, Drop, Slow Tears to the nostalgic beauty of Only in Sleep.

The imagery of the rose intertwines throughout, from the tender simplicity of A Spotless Rose to the dark warning of The Sick Rose, where love is tainted by selfishness. Pickard’s Three Latin Motets provide a moment of contemplation, while Set Me as a Seal and Deep in My Soul reflect on love’s enduring presence.
