Stravinsky to Prokofiev

Stravinsky to Prokofiev

Durham University Orchestral Society’s Chamber Ensemble presents ‘Stravinsky to Prokofiev,’ an intricate and playful programme exploring different landscapes, cultures through musical traditions.

Our Chamber Orchestra is proud to present its first concert of the term, Stravinsky to Prokofiev. Although it may be the smaller of DUOS’s two ensembles, it is equally as mighty. Through this intricate and playful programme, we will take you on a musical journey through different landscapes and cultures.

Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture opens the concert with a vivid depiction of the Scottish coastline, inspired by his visit to Fingal’s Cave. Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite brings theatrical eighteenth-century melodies into a modern day with wit and rhythmic energy.

Borodin’s In the Steppes of Central Asia transports us across an expansive landscape where Russian and Eastern musical worlds meet and finally, Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé Suite, originally composed as film music, uses military marches as satire to tell the story of a soldier who never existed, while also adding a seasonal festive twist.
