Roots x ACS are proud to present an evening commemorating and honouring our cultures, featuring a variety of performances from monologues to musical numbers, celebrating Black Heritage from across the diaspora.

Roots Theatre Company and Durham University’s African Caribbean Society are pleased to present The Black History Month Showcase.

We welcome you to a vibrant evening offering a spectacular culmination of selected monologues, poems and musical numbers that represent each student’s heritage. Honouring and promoting the vital contributions of Black culture in shaping British society throughout history. We invite all to share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture.

A chilled evening of jazz standards, from the niche to the classic, presented by some of DU Jazz Soc’s finest members.

Experience a night of jazz standards played at the highest level, featuring a stellar band comprising a horn section of Sam Armstrong (trumpet) and Annie Sullivan-Qosja (alto saxophone) alongside a rhythm section of Tommy Rothwell (piano), Dylan Land (bass) and Dan Hume (drums). An Evening of Standards is a gig for anybody and everybody, whether you’ve never listened to jazz before and would like to, know what mouthpiece Art Farmer used on ‘From Sweden With Love’ or have just listened to ‘Kind of Blue’ a few times!

Borogravia's at war. To help her country, Polly  disguises herself as a man and joins the army. She soon learns that not everything is as it seems.

Borogravia is at war with its neighbouring countries and times are hard for its citizens. Polly's brother has gone missing and so to find him, she must disguise herself as a man and join the army. She soon realises that other people in her regiment are hiding secrets too and that maybe Borogravia isn’t doing as well as they’ve all been told. This rag-tag team decide that they have to take matters into their own hands.

This Halloween Ooook!’s annual Pratchett play is Monstrous Regiment! A witty comedy satire with a vampire and troll, perfect for this spooky season.

Durham University Jazz Society present an evening of the music of Erykah Badu

Experience an evening celebrating the music of Erykah Badu, the 'Queen of Neo-Soul'. With it being 30 years since the hit single 'On & On' was released, Erykah Badu is the second artist whose music Jazz Soc is exploring this year. You will hear music from several albums of Badu's, with tracks such as Didn't Cha Know, Appletree and Bag Lady and promises to be a fantastic evening of smooth, funky neo-soul.

Singers from the award-winning Durham Opera Ensemble, accompanied by the Durham University Palatinate Orchestra, invite you to a spectacular Anniversary Concert, celebrating twenty years of the Durham Opera Ensemble in the magnificent setting of Durham Castle’s Great Hall.

Drawing exclusively from operas staged by Durham Opera Ensemble over the past twenty years, the programme celebrates the music that has shaped the society’s history. Enjoy a dazzling array of arias, duets, quartets and choruses from operas by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Purcell, Gilbert and Sullivan, and many more. Opening each half of the concert, the Palatinate Orchestra performs Strauss’ Die Fledermaus Overture and the Act IV Entr’acte from Bizet’s Carmen.

Join Durham University Choral Society for their first concert of the year as they perform Finzi’s "Magnificat" and "Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice", closing with Elgar’s "The Music Makers".

Conducted by Tim Burke, Durham University Choral Society presents a programme of reflection and sacrifice this Remembrance Day.

The concert opens with Finzi’s "Magnificat", a powerful introduction and a tribute to his 125th birth and 70th death anniversary. Following is his, "Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice", a thought-provoking anthem expressing lament and suffering.

The night builds up to Elgar’s "The Music Makers", where he brings out the creativity of what makes us human. The imagery of 'a singer who sings no more' is the epitome of the delicate transience of life, vividly foregrounding the importance of the world’s past.
