Rules for Being a Man

Rules for Being a Man

‘Rules for Being a Man’ by Alex Oates explore the different pressures men face going through life trying to be “a man”.

An honest new play that follows three generations of men all coming to terms with love, life and other people’s expectations of them. Created especially with the input of survivors of suicide and The Samaritans, “Rules for Being a Man” confronts the damaging toll toxic masculinity takes on male mental health.

HBT Miscast

HBT Miscast

A collection of students performing as characters they wouldn't traditionally be cast as. The one rule of miscast? There are no rules! Raising money for Acting for Others.

HBT Miscast showcases some of Durham’s biggest talents. In Miscast, no rules apply. Too old for Matilda? Not blonde enough for Elle? The wrong gender for Fantine? It doesn’t matter! The first in a two-part series, ‘In the Eye of the Hurricane’ looks to theatre to understand times of conflict, challenging our performers to get in touch with their emotions! The showcases aim to celebrate the arts and reassure that the show will go on! A proportion of ticket sales will be donated to Acting for Others, supporting the work they do providing support for theatre workers in these times.

Absolution

Absolution

Clever and quick-witted, Siegfried Sassoon thinks he knows what he wants. It is only in the middle of a war that he realises it might not be what he thought.

'For lust and senseless hatred make me glad, And my killed friends are with me where I go. Wound for red wound I burn to smite their wrongs; And there is absolution in my songs.' Siegfried Sassoon is a wealthy, upper-class boy who has been fed the idea that war brings honour and glory. As Sassoon grows as a poet, we realise it is the hand of grief and loss he has been dealt that will open his eyes to the truth of war. 'Absolution' covers the life of the war poet, Siegfried Sassoon, from childhood through to the Great War, telling his story through a mixture of drama and poetry.
