John has always understood himself as gay. However, he is forced to question this when, on a break from his boyfriend, he starts to fall in love with a woman.
Despite the bickering, John loves his boyfriend. John also loves his new girlfriend.
Mike Bartlett’s ‘COCK’ is an exploration of sexuality and identity. The play examines the conflict and guilt within John as his partners wait for him to decide who he wants to be with, and in turn, who he is. The pressure builds with time and the dinner that was meant to resolve the issue only worsens it as John’s dad encourages him to keep his identity unexplained
