Join us for an evening of dramatic orchestral music featuring Antonín Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony, Imogen Holst’s Persephone Overture, and Maurice Ravel’s La Valse.
Durham University Orchestral Society presents a dramatic programme exploring folklore and mythology. The evening opens with Imogen Holst’s ‘Persephone,’ drawing on the ancient Greek myth of her transition from life on earth as goddess of spring to her sinister descent into the underworld. Following this are the choreographic melodies of Maurice Ravel’s ‘La Valse,’ originally written as a tribute to Johann Strauss II and the grand tradition of the Viennese waltz, depicting the birth, growth and decline of this Romantic dancing style. The concert concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony, a joyful celebration of the Bohemian countryside, combining Czech folk music with symphonic forces.
