Beethoven’s Eroica

Beethoven’s Eroica

DUCE invites you to their epiphany concert: Fanny (Mendelssohn) Hensel’s Overture in C, Hummel Trumpet Concerto featuring soloist Tom Parker, and finally Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 ‘Eroica’.

Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel’s Overture in C was the first and only purely orchestral work she wrote. This scintillating piece gives you a taste of her musical style, but tragically went unpublished during her lifetime. Hummel’s trumpet concerto, written for the keyed trumpet inventor and virtuoso Weidinger, marked Hummel’s entrance into the Eterházy court. Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony was originally dedicated to Napoleon, who was then a heroic democratic figure. He later removed it in anger when Napoleon declared himself emperor. Heroic themes still prevail in the symphony, which is regarded as the first Romantic symphony and one of the greatest ever written.
