While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, six spellers spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box!
From the brilliant minds of William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee invites audiences into the uproarious world of a US regional spelling bee. The musical follows six teenage contestants, each with their quirks and dreams. Only one speller can win and make it to nationals. On top of an incredibly catchy score, the production offers the unique aspect of audience participation, allowing enthusiastic audience members to take to the stage as spellers. This heartfelt and comedic musical is a fast paced crowd-pleaser, and explores the challenges of adolescence, the pursuit of happiness, and the universal desire to belong.
